Museum-reserve Pushkin (Tsarskoe Selo) is an outstanding monument of world constructing and landscape architecture. Famous architects, sculptors and painters of the 18-20th centuries embodied thoughts and desires of the tzar's court. Located in the center of Pushkin the Ekaterininsky Palace was created by the great italian architect Rastrelli in russian baroque style, it's known by pompous Big Hall and the world's famous "Amber Room". Another distinguishing monument of Pushkin is the Alexander Palace constructed in classicism style but nevertheless rooms of emperor Nickolai II and his spouse Alexandra are designed in modern. The integral part of the museum-reserve Tsarskoe Selo are Ekaterininsky and Alexandrovsky parks totally occuping 300 hectars. There are more than 100 landmarks in the parks of Pushkin - palaces, pavillions, bridges, marble monuments from gotic, turkish and chinese architectural styles. Tsarskoe Selo begins its history from the Peter the First governing when in 1710-1720 it was built to play the role of the emperor summer gala residence. The great russian poet Alexander Pushkin studied in Tsarskoselsky Emperor High School which was located here from 1811 till 1843. In soviet times the park-palace ensemble Tsarskoe Selo was statused as a museum, the other buildings were given up to an educational and medical establishments, that's why in 1918 the town changed its name to Detskoe Selo. Then in 1937 to memorise the 100 anniversary of Alexander Pushkin death the town has got the name of Pushkin. During the World War II for 2 years Pushkin was occupied by nazi Germany, the wall facing of the Amber Room disappeared, its location still remains unknown. After the war Pushkin was totally reconstructed, now Tsarkoe Selo is state museum-reserve visited by thousands of tourists every day.
