The Alexandrinsky Theater also known as the Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater was founded in 1756 by Empress Elizabeth (daughter of Peter I, founder of Saint-Petersburg). As the Alexandrinsky Theater is the forerunner of all Russian theatres and the beginner of state policy of the theatre arts it is considered to be the oldest Russian national theatre. The Russian State Drama Theater served as an attribute of the Russian state system for over two and a half centuries. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries it was the main imperial theater; Russian emperors had been directly involved with its guidance. In 1832 the theatre moved to magnificient building in the middle of Nevsky Prospect that was designed by famous italian architect Carlo Rossi. It's got the name of the Alexandrinsky Theater in the honor of Alexandra Fedorovna, the spouse of Emperor Nikolay I. The theater crowns a unique ensemble of Rossi’s buildings, which was named to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has a 5-circle auditorium, a spacious stage, palace style lobbies, and an astonishing facade, which became one of the emblems of the Imperial Capital of Russia. The Alexandrinsky remember the greatest public figures of the Russian state, politicians, military men and people of arts like A. Pushkin, F. Dostoevsky, L. Tolstoy, P. Tchaikovsky and numerous members of European royal families. Almost all premieres of Russian drama classics has taken place here, a number of famous actors and actresses performed on its stage, distinguished theater directors and great composes worked at the theater. The theater has the richest museum stock that includes a unique collection of decoration sets, costumes, furniture, theater properties and weapons that is considered the true national treasure of Russia.
In 2005 the Alexandrinsky Theater was reconstructed, its interiors restored to the historical image, the facilities of the theatre were technically improved. The grand opening of the Alexandrinsky Theater on August 30, 2006, in the course of celebration of the its 250th anniversary became the culmination of the festivities and was held in the presence of the state leaders.
